Cast of Characters: *** First of Tarsakh (April) in the Year of Wild Magic (1372 DR). Kestral and Dunstan board Tempest's Teapot in Harrowdale. Bladebrother Malavar and Torstan board the same ship in Scardale. All three disembark in Yhaunn, at midnight under a full moon. Torstan hears something from the alley. Dustan and Malavar see something from the alley. After a sun rod is thrown, hundreds of rats floating on a body. They destroy the sun rod, and seem to be paddling toward the group. The group executes a strategic retreat. They find their way to a Tavern (Reltagar's Roost), body-barge floating after. Malavar casts Sanctuary, giving him and Kestral a chance to check the body, which the rats suddenly abandon. The cloths are torn, and the face is destroyed beyond recognition. The man had a tattoo on his chest, of six swords in circle with points out. In the Tavern, there is one fellow who seems a bit out of place compared to the other (Gar). Malavar engages him in some conversation. "My friend and I are investigating some bodies that have turned up in the harbor." They talk a bit, and Gar checks the door, whereupon hundreds of beetie-eyes stare at him. Malavar talks to the stinky guy in the corner, who said interesting things about rats. Later, Malavar takes a look out the door, and sees the hundreds of rats. Rats break the ceiling, so that the moon shines through, and attack several patrons, including the crazy one who talked about rats. The group and other patrons exit by breaking the back wall. The group runs to another alley, while Kestral lifts off the ground and Dunstan pulls her long. In the next alley, Torstan nearly trips over a grate of some sort. Eventually, the party heads down the grate while Dunstan opts to fly over the city instead of following into the water. The water is 5 ft deep. The walls are covered in plaster. Torstan chips some away, revealing a painting of a bloody battle. Men and elves are fighting in the depiction, and at the culmination, there is a great monster. It is fighting about a hundred men and elves simultaneously. The battle is also far more bloody than one would expect. The four push open the doors, and quickly find the secret door a few steps above. This opens into a cell. There is a boar in another cell, and one cell contains a set of clothes and the remains of a meal. The pattern of lock picking tells Gar that something came through the secret passage, let someone out of the cell, and left through the large door. Behind the large door, we find a dead guard. Outside, Dunstan finds two doors into the Temple of Selune. The guards don't have much for brains, and are suspicious of him. He flies around the city. Inside, the other four find the same guards who are trying to protect the temple from the encroaching rats. "Don't bother the Moon Mistress' ritual." "Where is she, because they are probably trying to bother her!?!" They promptly direct us. We find a pool containing two sharks, with a spiral staircase leading up at the center. Kestral, still levitating, pulls herself across. She ascends the stairs and finds two ratmen, one of whom is picking the lock to the door. Kestral calls out, and combat ensues. However, Kestral cannot seem to hurt them, and they nearly cut her down. As the others try to wade through were-sharks, she retreats. We search for silvered weapons. The next few round, we find 3 Moon's Hands (silvered heavy mace) and Dunstan. Again, we make our way across the pool, fighting were-sharks. At the top of the stairs, Kestral breaks the glass door, and Dunstan throws a tanglefoot bag at one of the were-rats. The others make it to the top. Torstan is briefly staggered; Kestral and Gar fall unconscious; Torstan and Malavar kill the two ratmen. Loot from Ratmen The group waits out the night on the stairs. Between them and the sharks, nothing else disturbs the Moon Mistress. We are thanked from High Moon Mistress Dhauna Myritar. She heals Kestral and Gar. Kestral: "The Helping Hand is glad to be of service." She walks across the water to take care of the rest of the temple. The group wades through the water, which now contains two naked and unconscious sailors. We wait in a room for a few hours, after which, we are rewarded. Each party member gets a Moon's Hand (silvered heavy mace) and one jar of Moonfire salve (worth 2500gp: 1/2 lb, targeted dispel magic or fly or darkvision or greater mage hand or cure serious wounds). We also find out that the rat creatures were 'moon rats' that become intelligent in moonlight. They were trying to get the object created by the ritual, which produces true moonlight. The group shows the secret passage to the clerics. At the same time, we take a longer look at the painting. A gigantic human is battling a hundred normal-sized human and elven foes. He has many arms, though this may represent artistic license. He has the symbol of the six swords on him. Gar thinks that the symbol belongs to Garagos, the patron of berserkers and bloodlust. Also, there seem to be traces of charcoal over the painting. Taking a rubbing reveals a dungeon map. It seems we have twelve hours before the third night of full moon to find this dungeon and spoil evil's plan. The temple wish us to take a representative. His name is Selwyn. He is six feet tall with blue eyes. He has a subdued demeanor, nice clothes (as that of a higher social class), and carries a spear and crossbow. |
